The Cloverdale Story

The Small Company With The Big Taste For Flavor

Cloverdale's quality story began in 1915, when Hoy Russell founded Mandan Creamery in Mandan, North Dakota. Insisting on uncompromised quality from the start, Russell's small dairy business quickly built a reputation for the freshest, best dairy products in area kitchens.

Within a few years, the company successfully introduced a line of premium-grade pork products that steadily attracted more foodservice and retail customers. So when bigger dairy corporations pushed it out of the dairy business in the 1970s, the company diversified into a premium pork company, plus foodservice distribution and trucking too.

In 1995, Cloverdale divested its other businesses to make its greatest capability its sole focus - pork products with unsurpassed quality and flavor.

Today that focus is sharper than ever. Cloverdale Foods Company remains family owned and committed to offering super premium pork, packed with unsurpassed flavor and quality.

Old-Fashion High Tech

Cloverdale's superb quality comes from some of the most advanced processing and packaging technology available in the business - and upgrades are continuous.

But one major step of Cloverdale's processing will never change. We'll always slowly smoke our hams, bacon and sausage batch-by-batch over the savory glow of pure hickory chips - for incomparable full flavor. And even though sales of Cloverdale hickory-smoked hams, bacon and sausage keep growing, we refuse to switch to conveyor-belt smoking for speed like our bigger competitors. One taste and you'll know why.

Food Safety First

Every working day, we closely inspect, completely clean and again inspect every component of our production facilities. That's why Cloverdale is proven to have one of the industry's most stringent, aggressive and successful sets of procedures for sanitation and safety compliance. It starts with our close adherence to HACCP guidelines and thorough inspections of every day's production. All product is held until after the inspection analysis - when safety is assured.

But don't take our word for it. Cloverdale's co-pack customers are some of the biggest, best-known brand names in retail and foodservice pork. They frequently audit our food safety procedures. Cloverdale consistently receives high scores - often outscoring the facilities of the co-pack customers themselves.

Custom Customer Service

Cloverdale customers have come to expect the direct, one-on-one service and rapid response they rely on from Cloverdale's own regional sales managers, as well as leading brokers throughout the West.

With its detailed attention to the quality and safety of its foods, Cloverdale's customer service/satisfaction record is well beyond the norm.*

The Brand That's Winning The West

Cloverdale Foods is actually a smaller company today than it was in 1995. Yet now the company is more focused, dynamic and successful than ever. In the late 1990s, Cloverdale's sales territory was limited to the upper Midwest. Today, Cloverdale covers most of the western United States, selling over 40 million pounds of product annually.

Approximately 40% of our plants' production is co-packed for major pork companies and their brands. Of the remaining 60% of product packed under Cloverdale brands, about half is for foodservice and the other half is for retail sales.

As Cloverdale Foods has evolved over the decades, it has remained a multi-generation, family-owned business. And along the way, we've never lost sight of the uncompromised insistence on top quality on which Hoy Russell founded our business. And no matter how Cloverdale continues to grow - we never will.
